Since joining the King County Council in 2013, Rod Dembowski has demonstrated a consistent and thoughtful approach to public service, earning a reputation as a responsive, principled leader for District 1. His tenure on the Council has been marked by a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility, environmental stewardship, and policies that enhance both the quality of life and economic vitality of the region.
Rod currently serves as Chair of the Council’s Budget & Fiscal Management Committee, where he has been a key figure in delivering balanced budgets that invest in core public services while maintaining long-term financial stability. As Vice Chair of the Transportation, Economy & Environment Committee, he has advanced innovative infrastructure investments—including the successful push to electrify Metro Transit’s bus fleet—cementing King County’s role as a national leader in clean transportation. His work to preserve open spaces across the district, from Kirkland to Bothell to Lake Forest Park, reflects his deep understanding of the connection between livability and long-term regional competitiveness.
Throughout his career, Rod has prioritized inclusive policies that benefit working families and small businesses. He led the creation of Washington’s first 12-week paid parental leave policy at the county level and supported reforms that promote gender equity in both county employment and contracting. Rod has also been a champion for public health and safety, playing a lead role in establishing the Regional Crisis Response program and securing funding for a Behavioral Health Institute as part of the Harborview Bond. His legislative work consistently reflects a balanced focus on accountability, innovation, and human dignity.
A product of a working-class, single-parent household in King County, Rod brings a grounded, community-first perspective to governance. His early experience running a small business as a teenager, combined with professional training in business and law, has given him the tools to navigate complex policy challenges with pragmatism and purpose. He has never missed a vote since taking office—an indication of his work ethic and dedication to public service.
